In a composite of polypropylene (PP) and straw, these two components are blended physically, so they behave almost independently. PP is quiet stable against biodegradation (is a non-biodegradable material), whereas straw is a biodegradable natural composite material. The biodegradation behavior of straw in the PP composite is different than when it is loose and has open access to air and biological agents (enzymes, insects, etc.) In the composite, the straw is encapsulated by PP matrix (continuous phase), so, it is restricted from access to sufficient biodegrading agents. In other words, straw is somehow protected against biodegradation in the PP composite.
Overall, the addition of wheat straw to plastic reduces the amount of plastic used, which then reduces the extraction of oil and protects the environment.
